Checklist: Assigned Duties for Practicum

At the beginning of February I had a chance to participate in the process of weeding books.

To complete this process, first I took the bar code off the back of the books that have been weeded, and since these books would be place on govdeals.com, I had to take a black marker and mark out the name of the school; furthermore, to make the process easier of scanning, all the books that have been weeded, the bar codes were taken off the books were taken and placed on another sheet to make it easier to scan.

During the month of February I attended a Professional Development Day with the Media Specialist from Portal Middle High School for half a day.

I had the opportunity to learn about various new Web 2.0 tools to enhance classroom instruction for teachers. Two of the Web 2.0 tools that I enjoyed and I feel would be great to share as a part of my professional development for teachers are Animoto and Prezi. Animoto allows teachers and students to upload pictures and create short segmented videos. http://animoto.com/
Prezi allows teachers and students to create interactive slide show presentations that zoom in and out on certain parts of the presentations; in addition, it allows users to add videos and basic animations.

Throughout the course of the semester I checked in books and checked out books using Bulloch County's cataloguing system Destiny.

http://www.bulloch.k12.ga.us/jpbes/Media_Center.htm

The process to check in books is simple – click on the circulation tab and on the left side of the web page click on check in; next scan the barcode. The process to check out the book is the same – click on the circulation tab and on the left side of the web page click on check out; next either I or the student will scan the barcode to check the book out. If the barcode will not scan either during the check in process or during the check out process, then the barcode must be typed in.

Destiny also allows me to search for a book by entering the title or the subject in the search box and either by clicking on the following buttons to locate a book: Title, keyword, author, subject or series.

In March I had the opportunity to catalogue books and prepare a MARC order using the following process:

1st I entered the title of the book, if the book could not be found by title I entered the ISBN. Next using the Marcive Inc Website:
http://www.marcive.com

I was able to enter the information of books and place an order for MARC labels (spine label sets).

For the month of April I created a display board

in tribute to National Library Week and School Library Month.

I placed information on the board pertaining to the many

roles of a media specialist, the history of national library week and school library month.

I also selected books along with both Media Specialist to display in tribute to National Library Month and School Library Month. The selected books and the display board accompanied my enrichment/enjoyment unit for kindergartners. The unit was to remind kindergartens of the many fun things they can do at the library, how to care for books and how the library will always have a major role in their life even as adults.

The Past Months of February and March

The past few months I have learned so much at my practicum site. I have the opportunity to weed a collection of books that dated back to the 1970s. I have the opportunity to add new books to be catologue and aid in placing an order for MARC labels. I have helped to check in books and check out books using the Destiny Catalogue system. I have even had the opportunity to look and view students history to resolve any issues of missing books or overdue books.

On March 24, 2010 I taught a lesson as an instructional partner in collaboration with a 3rd grade class teacher at Julia P Bryant Elementary. The area of collaboration was based upon Library References that students could use as informational resource materials. The references that were used to complete the activity was the following:
an encyclopedia, an dictionary/thesaurus, an atlas and almanac.

The Past Month: January

January was an exciting month as I started this new journey of doing my practicum last month. I attended Technology days at Southeast Bulloch High School on January 4, 2010.
One of the classes I attended was Glogster. We learned about using educational glogs to create interactive posters that students can use as visual aids for school assignments or projects. http://edu.glogster.com/
There are two types of glog sites one for educational use for students and teachers, and another one for general use by anyone www.glogster.com.
For students I highly recommend the educational glogs for your students.

During the week of January 13th - 15th I attended the FETC conference in Orlando, where I learned so much and so many new instructional tools in the area of technology.

Late January is also when I started my practicum at Julia P Bryant and Portal Middle High School. My home site is Julia P Bryant. This is a current picture of the media center of Julia P Bryant Elementary School, next year they will be moving into their new school that is currently being built.
So far I have had the opportunity to help weed some, work at the circulation desk, re-shelve books and catalog new books. I have also had the opportunity to read books to Kindergarten classes during assigned storytimes.
